Guadalupe River Trail Bike Connections Plan

September 2024 to Present
Client: City of San José

The Guadalupe River Trail (GRT) is a key part of the San José active transportation network, connecting important locations like schools, parks, residential areas, transit stations, and job centers like Downtown San José and North San José. It supports the City's goals of promoting alternative modes of transportation, improving safety, increasing bicycle use, and providing connectivity within and outside San José. The trail sees a high volume of users, with an average of 500 per day and over 180,000 annually, making it a vital resource for the community.

The GRT faces seasonal flooding at low points of the trail, forcing users onto less safe and indirect street-level routes. The GRT Bike Connections Plan aims to address this issue by creating safe and easily navigable on-street routes and connections that serve as detours during flooding events. The project team engaged the community to identify key flooding hotspots and gather feedback on draft concepts for streetscape improvement and wayfinding. Winter led a multi-faceted engagement strategy that included promoting, planning, and facilitating a community survey, two community workshops, and four pop-up events over a year and a half.
